Aural Flow
Listening with the river

This research approaches the Besòs River through listening as a method of
territorial inquiry. Rather than simply listening to the river, the project asks how the river listens to us, proposing a reciprocal relationship capable of revealing material persistences, geological memories, infrastructural residues, and social
transformations that remain inscribed within the territory even after processes of
ecological regeneration.
The methodological core of the project is the creation of hydrophone sculptures:
resonant devices conceived as tools for territorial mediation. Collectively built
through an open laboratory bringing together artists, residents, students, and
specialists, these sculptures will enable the recording of the Besòs’ underwater
vibrations and provide access to dimensions of river life that usually remain
invisible to everyday perception. Their design will incorporate references to the
basin’s industrial history through the symbolic use of materials associated with the
heavy metals that marked its historical contamination, including lead, zinc, copper,
and nickel.
The river is understood as a living entity that actively participates in the production of multispecies and intergenerational relationships. Rather than working with pre-existing communities, the project seeks to generate a liquid community around
the act of listening: an open and dynamic network of exchange, care, and collective
knowledge production.

1. Listening with the River

Hydroacoustic recordings, soundscape documentation, territorial research, and intergenerational interviews aimed at reconstructing a sensitive memory of the Besòs’ ecological, social, and cultural transformations.

2. Open Hydrophone Sculpture Laboratory

Collaborative design and construction of resonant bodies and experimental hydrophones through sculptural practices, accessible electronics, and shared listening experiences.

3. Sound Walks and Collective Listening

Hydroacoustic recordings, soundscape documentation, territorial research, and intergenerational interviews aimed at reconstructing a sensitive memory of the Besòs’ ecological, social, and cultural transformations.

4. Resonances Beyond the Riverbanks

An Itinerant multichannel sound installation presented across Trinitat Vella, Bon Pastor, Baró de Viver, La Sagrera, and Sant Andreu. The installation will integrate underwater recordings, voices, soundscapes, and hydrophone sculptures. An open microphone station will invite participants to contribute new memories, stories, and experiences connected to the Besòs.
A series of six podcasts will expand the research beyond the exhibition space. The episodes will bring together hydroacoustic recordings, interviews, and conversations with historians, urban planners, biologists, local residents, and project participants, forming a living sound archive of the river’s ecological, social, and cultural persistences.
